Hammock camping tricks that will make your life easier

Most people associate tricks with magicians, e.g. a guy stuffs ten pigeons up his arms and wows people on stage. The awesome thing about tricks is they can help you solve hard hammock camping problems with simple solutions, for instance, did you know that you can create a lantern with a jug of water? What you have to do is strap a headlamp to a jug of water and you are done, the lantern you create can be used to brighten up your hammock instead of using fire. The best part is you have water and light in one package.

Protect the important stuff

It is easy to ignore simple things such as your toilet paper when you are out camping; the problem is if you don’t store it properly it will be crushed and sometimes even damaged. Things may get worse if it rains; now imagine having to answer the call of nature without toilet paper. Survivalists will tell you that you can use leaves but what they forget is you may be allergic to something that you don’t know about until you use it. This means that picking leaves and using them to wipe your self is a no-no, the best option you have here is to put your toilet paper in a can. A good example is a coco or coffee can, to make things easier you should cut a slit on the side where the paper can slide out.

Sage is a good insect repellent

Mosquitoes bite leaving you with bumps and in some cases disease, the easiest way to keep them away is with bug repellent. The problem is bug repellents don’t smell good. A natural solution to this is sage, burning sage will keep mosquitoes away and you won’t have to worry about smelling like repellent in your hammock when you turn in for the night, oh and make sure that you carry a bug net.

Learn to pack your stuff

If you are going on a multi-day hammock camping trip you will need a lot of things, the problem is if you are going to trek for the entirety of the trip carrying all that stuff may become an issue which can ruin your trip (e.g. back pain). The best thing to do is to get the right camping bag and learn how to pack it. Good camping bags come with different compartments where you can store food; cooking gear etc, therefore, chose the right camping bag.

Don’t drop the soap

When you take a shower in the woods the one thing that sucks most is putting the soap back in your bag, this is because the soap will leave everything smelling like soap the next time you take it out. You may have to eat food that tastes like soap, your extra clothes will smell like soap etc. to avoid this you need two things bar soap and a peeler, the idea is to peel small portions of the soap and use it , this way you won’t have to put wet soap in your bag. Hammocking in college

The reality is very different from imagination, just look at all those college movies and series on television and compare them to your college days. The truth is when you get to college you realize that things are very different from what you expected, for one, you have to study to pass if you don’t know you might be in college for a very long time. You will also have to share your personal space with strangers, and if you are not into it, things will get uncomfortable.

The most awesome thing about college is you will get to meet people and build long-term relationships with them, when in college you will have a lot of time on your hands. This means that you will need a pastime activity that you enjoy to keep you sane, today, one of the most popular pastime activities in British Columbian colleges is hammocking.

What makes hammocking great is it helps in stress relief, and believe me you will have a lot of stress in college e.g. you may get dumped, you will have to meet deadlines, and most importantly you will have a study. If you’re interested about hammocks, why not find out more about it.

There are people everywhere

The biggest issue with living on a campus is students are everywhere; this means that getting time for your self is not easy. If you have an upcoming exam you need some place where you can study with minimal distractions, the first option is usually the library. The problem with the library is if you have a test it means that 200 other students also have a test i.e. most of them will be there, and there will be no difference between studying in the dorm and library.

Hammocks are a way out because you can hang them anywhere far away from humans, a place where you can have peace and study. Also, hammocks increase your concentration meaning that you will gain more when studying than at a desk.

Social bonding

You are a social being, therefore you need friends. Hammocking is a great way to make friends, look at it this way, it’s something that requires minimum effort and can be combined with any other activity e.g. hiking, camping, studying or even drinking if you are into that.

It is also a great way to find love; you see the thing is sitting on a hammock with someone you care about will bring you together in ways that sitting on a couch cant. This makes it an excellent way to pass the time.

Most college beds are not that comfortable that’s why most kids walk around slouching; hammocks are very comfortable because there is minimal pressure on your body. Sleeping on one will get you re-energized and you will feel like a new person each time, depending on how big your room is you can switch your bed for a hammock.

This can help you to save space, and can also be used for power naps.

Stress in college is bad; hammocks can help you control stress therefore if you don’t have one get one today and enjoy the benefits.

Extreme Hammocking in British Columbia

Extreme Hammock

Define extreme. To some it is the most overused word in the English language and to others extreme means reaching the highest or the greatest degree of something, in this case sleeping or sitting in a hammock. Oh yes you heard that right, it is possible to take hammocking to the extreme, but remember if you are an adrenaline junkie you are addicted to danger which can be a bad thing.

This is because if you take it too far you will want to outdo what you did previously, meaning that you will put yourself in more danger as you progress. The point I’m trying to put across here is, if you have an addictive personality its best to try something that does not risk your life.

So what is extreme hammocking? Extreme hammocking involves you hanging your hammock in places where normal people consider absurd or too dangerous. For example, you can hang your hammock under a bridge or you can hung your hammock on the side of a cliff, the only question here is, are you afraid of heights?

Hanging hammocks at high altitude

Extreme Hammock 2

High altitude simply means areas that are 8000-12000 feet; extremely high altitude is areas that are 18,000 ft plus. Now the highest point in British Columbia is obviously mount fair-weather, it’s not as high as the Alps or Everest but it still sits pretty at a height of 15,299 feet.

Advertisers are evil, that’s why they will tell you something is extreme but when you get there you get so bored that you will start thinking about the last Avengers movie and how much it sucked, and still stay bored. This means that for you to have fun you must find your own way, if you are into extreme camping I’m sure that you hate to have someone holding your hand. Therefore what you should do is grab some of your buddies and a map and head on down to mount fair-weather or any other extreme locations in BC.

Remember BC is the original home of diversity, meaning that there are many extreme locations to hang your hammock. Some locations that you should consider are:

  1. Judges route, mount Arrow smith in port alberni
  2. Albert Edward strathcona park
  3. Okanagan high rim
  4. Ice line trail. Yoho national park
  5. Ediziza plateau(you will need a stand)

Most of the above double up as awesome hiking trails, meaning that you should be prepared to hike. The awesome thing about hammocks is you can hang them anywhere, therefore where you hang yours is up to you.

The cold will get you

I’m sure in elementary your teacher told you that the higher you go the cooler it becomes, she wasn’t crazy or anything it’s the truth. This means that if you go hammocking at very high altitudes the cold will get you and if you are not prepared you will get the cold butt syndrome or worse. Therefore if you are new to hammock camping, it’s best to educate yourself on how to stay warm in cold areas.
